Trap Shooting Basics: Getting Started

Whether you’re new to trap shooting or looking to brush up on the basics, getting your setup right can make a big difference to your shooting.

Trap shooting consists of five stands, with targets released from the trap house at different angles after you call “pull”. Because you never know exactly where the target will go, having a consistent hold point is an important place to start.

Your hold point is where you position your gun before calling for the target. Rather than holding directly at the trap house, the gun should generally be held slightly above and in front of it. This gives you a better view of the target as it leaves the trap and allows you to move smoothly onto its path.

Once the clay appears, follow it with your gun and allow some lead before taking the shot. Straightaway targets require only a small amount of lead, while targets travelling further to the left or right require more. The key is to focus on where the clay is going, rather than where it is when you first see it.

Many trap guns also feature two beads along the rib, which can be aligned into a figure-eight. This provides a consistent reference for your gun's elevation and helps you start from the correct position.

Like any part of shooting, consistency comes with practice. Focus on your hold point, watch the target, move smoothly with it and remember to shoot where the clay is going.
