View full detailsNot all swags are built equal. Cheap ones leak at the seams, sag in the middle, and smell like a wet dog after one trip. A quality camping swag should tick a few boxes:
Single swags suit solo campers, motorbike tourers, and anyone who values a fast setup and small pack size. Most roll down to roughly sleeping bag size and weigh between 5 and 9kg, depending on canvas weight and mattress thickness.
Double swags give couples room to sleep without elbowing each other all night. They’re heavier at 10-15kg, but the extra space makes longer trips far more comfortable. Some double swags fit a queen-size sleeping bag inside, which is worth checking before you buy swags for your next trip.
For families or group camps, stacking single swags works better than oversized options that won’t fit in the back of a ute. Pair your swag with the right gear from our camping shop, and you’re sorted for any trip.
Australian camping means red dust, coastal salt, heavy dew, and the odd downpour that wasn’t in the forecast. Quality swags in Australia need to withstand it all without falling apart after a season. Look for:
A good swag is the centrepiece, but the right accessories make camp life easier. A quality sleeping bag rated for the conditions, a headlamp, and a compact camp pillow turn a swag into a proper setup.
If you’re heading bush for more than a weekend, check our hunting shop and fishing shop for everything from rods to optics. H. Rehfisch & Co. stocks outdoor gear across every category, from our gun shop to camping essentials, so you can kit out the whole trip in one hit.
Browse our full range of camping swags for sale and find the right fit for your next trip. Order your camping swag online for fast delivery across Australia, or drop into our Ballarat store to check them out in person. We’ve been kitting out Aussie campers for over 160 years, and we know what works.
Solo campers do well with a single swag that packs small and sets up in minutes. If you’re sharing with a partner, a double swag gives enough room for two adults without feeling cramped. Think about your vehicle space and how far you’re carrying it from the car to camp.
New canvas swags need seasoning before their first wet trip. Set the swag up, spray it thoroughly with a garden hose, and let it dry completely. Repeat two or three times. This swells the cotton fibres and closes the weave, creating a natural waterproof barrier that holds up in rain.
Swags are standalone shelters with built-in mattresses and canvas covers. They’re designed for open-air camping, vehicle-based touring, and spots where pitching a full tent is overkill. Most swags have enough weatherproofing to handle overnight dew and light rain on their own without any extra shelter.
Brush off loose dirt and debris while the canvas is dry. For deeper cleans, use lukewarm water and a soft brush without detergent, which can strip the waterproofing. Always dry your swag completely before rolling and storing it to prevent mould and mildew from setting in.
50mm high-density foam is the minimum for comfortable sleep on hard ground. 70mm and above suits side sleepers and longer trips where comfort matters more. Self-inflating mattress inserts add cushion without much extra bulk, but check they fit your swag dimensions before buying.
Swags handle cold weather well when paired with a properly rated sleeping bag. Canvas traps body heat and blocks wind better than most lightweight tents. Add a thermal liner and a groundsheet underneath for extra insulation on frosty nights in the high country.
